The Challenge
Sleep apnea is more than poor sleep – it significantly increases the risk of serious complications like stroke, especially for patients with atrial fibrillation. Yet over half of those affected are unaware and go untreated. The challenge? Current diagnostic methods rely on specialized facilities and hands-on staff – making them resource-intensive and limiting reach. Region Hovedstaden needed a solution that could scale screening using IoT, minimize the need for healthcare personnel, and reach patients wherever they are.
Our Approach
From day one, we committed to building the solution with patients, researchers, and doctors – not just for them. A cross-functional process connected clinical knowledge, design, and technology into one shared language. Through workshops with clinicians and user testing with 20+ patients, we transformed technical complexity into a seamless, intuitive user experience.

“Digital health solutions need to work in practice – not just on paper. We needed a partner who understands how people interact with digital healthcare, and who could deliver what patients actually expect.”

“From the beginning, Abtion brought a strong co-design approach, which resulted in a user-friendly and research-grounded platform. The solution makes it easy for patients to take part in research projects and ensures high-quality data.”

The solution
Overcoming challenges
Developing a nationwide DCT platform required technical scalability and robustness. We integrated it with Region Hovedstaden’s infrastructure, including RedCap and FibriCheck, ensuring accurate display of ECG data in compliance with ISO and CE certifications. A pilot study with 10 patients validated the data flows and helped fine-tune the experience – laying the groundwork for secure, scalable rollout.
Results
The platform significantly improved both accessibility and efficiency in sleep apnea screening and treatment, showcasing the transformative potential of decentralized clinical trial (DCT) platforms. Around 1,000 patients were screened and potentially placed on CPAP therapy without the need for hospital visits. Real-time monitoring and IoT integration enhanced data quality throughout the trial, while the reduced reliance on sleep clinics helped free up valuable hospital resources.
