Allergy that medicine doesn't keep down

ALK has worked with allergy since 1923, when a pharmacist and a doctor in Copenhagen registered the first pharmaceutically produced allergen extract. Since then ALK has grown into a global pharmaceutical company with more than 2,000 employees, and its focus has held steady all the way: preventing and treating allergy.

As a world leader in allergy immunotherapy, ALK develops products with a long-lasting effect. The goal is a better quality of life for the allergy sufferers whose condition isn't under control, even though they take medicine to relieve their symptoms.

Lab calculations in the doctor's hands

ALK wanted to develop a digital tool for recording and analysing how well allergy patients respond to their medicine. It was to be part of ALK's product development and to better equip general practitioners to diagnose and advise on treatment.

The idea was an advanced "calculator" that could do the calculations ALK normally does in its labs. Just as important, the result had to be presented so it was easy to understand and couldn't be misread.

Designed, tested and ready to build

Observation first, then prototypes

We started by observing conversations between patients and doctors, to understand the situation the tool would be used in. Then we designed a series of prototypes of the product.

Tested in the field, again and again

The prototypes were tested in the field, adjusted and tested again. We kept going until we had a clear indication that the product was understood correctly, and that patients couldn't misread the results interpreted by the algorithm behind the tool.
