Burglaries rarely come alone
If there has been a burglary in your neighbourhood within the past four weeks, your own home is more likely to be burgled. It's a frightening statistic, but it's worth keeping an eye on, because it gives you the chance to take precautions so you don't become part of it yourself.
Verisure's idea, Shape's app, our data
Verisure is the largest alarm company in the Nordics and specialises in securing private homes. To make more people aware of what they can do to protect themselves against burglary, Verisure went to our good friends at Shape, who are among the best mobile app developers in Denmark.
The idea was a service that gathered data from the local police districts and passed it on to users. It was extended with reporting of suspicious behaviour and a "burglary map" that could be useful for people house hunting.
That took large amounts of data from every police district, and technology that could go through police reports, pull out the relevant information and send it on to the app. All within the legal limits on how data can be used. That part was ours, and it turned into (yet another) good collaboration with Shape.

Lookout
A free app that keeps an eye on the neighbourhood
The result was Lookout: a free app that shows you the risk of burglary in your local area. It warns you when there has been a burglary nearby, or when another local user has seen something suspicious.
A scraper that finds what matters
The most important data sources were the police districts' daily reports, Facebook pages and Twitter profiles. To collect the data, we built a scraper trained to find and pick out the relevant information in the constant stream of updates.
