A quick guide to the new European Accessibility Act

Published

June 4, 2025

Accessibility doubts? We’ll take a look at your digital product.

Starting in June 2025, companies that sell products or services directly online must comply with the new European Accessibility Act (EAA), which introduces stricter requirements for digital accessibility.

Fortunately, accessibility is more than just a legal requirement. It is a real competitive advantage and an investment in a broader, more satisfied user base.
It is about making it easy for everyone to interact with your digital platform, whether they have a disability, are holding a baby, or are simply on the move.

We offer an accessibility audit that will align your digital product with the new EU standards. If you're already familiar with the rules, we’ll help you fine-tune your solution so you’re spot on. If not, keep reading for a quick overview, and reach out when you're ready to get started.

Make the rules work in your favour

The EAA is not just a legal obligation. It is also an opportunity to create better digital products.

"Our accessibility audit shows you how to turn the new rules into simple wins, using accessibility requirements to strengthen, not complicate, your digital solution."

‍Lead UX Designer

EAA refers to WCAG 2.1– what does that mean?

To comply with the EAA, your product must meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) at levels A and AA. The legal basis is WCAG 2.1, but the latest version, 2.2, covers the same and more. By following WCAG 2.2, you also meet 2.1. The guidelines are built on four core principles that shape accessible design:

Perceivable:

Content must be perceivable to all users. For example, text alternatives help screen readers interpret images.

Operable:

Navigation and functions must be usable by everyone, even for users who only have access to a keyboard or assistive technologies.

Understandable:

Content and interactions must be logical and easy to follow so that users do not get lost on the site.

Robust:

Solutions must work across browsers, devices, and assistive tools, from screen readers to alternative input methods.

Benefits for your business

When done right, meeting the requirements also means meeting more users where they are.

  • Reach a wider audience

A significant portion of the population only gets full value from your product when it has accessibility improvements. This includes an estimated 101 million people in Europe.

  • Improve the user experience

Accessibility efforts often lead to a better overall experience for everyone. A well-thought-out user experience can also improve your conversion rates.

  • Boost SEO and drive traffic

Semantically correct HTML and structured content help search engines understand your site better, creating more opportunities for organic traffic.

  • Strengthen your brand and credibility

Leading on accessibility shows social responsibility, high quality, and professionalism. This strengthens your brand in the eyes of users and stakeholders. We Can Help with an Accessibility Audit
